Judith Atchley

Judith Atchley has been painting and drawing since early childhood. Her paintings reside in many private collections around the world as well as galleries and museums. Her multi-media art works often contain a collection of papers and fibers and are combined with watercolors, oils and acrylic paints.

Judith draws the viewer into her work using a combination of media and layering that creates a unique three dimensional effect. Her first foray into book cover design began with her husband's first book, The Soul of the Land. She used original artwork utilizing fibers taken from the land and composing them in such a way that her rendition of the heart and soul of the land is revealed. Both the dust jacket and Giclèe reproductions retain much of the three dimensional effect.

The cover for We, The Shamans was taken from another of Judith’s original works. It is an acrylic painting titled If These Walls Could Talk . This painting was built up layer by layer over a two-year period in order to achieve a compelling three-dimensional effect. In creating this painting, she also incorporated some of the original plaster from the old deserted house and in keeping with the theme, the frame is made of old barn wood.

Even when looking at a picture of this art work you feel as though you could reach right in and move the door. Judith says, this painting has deep meaning for her and believes that it reflects what the book is all about. She says, “Wow! If only these walls could talk, what tales would they tell? Remember, a picture is worth a thousand words and “they” say that a good cover sells books.”
